Basically, we have two problems which are related. First, our country has been brainwashed with bad science. Both economic science and natural science are not honestly taught. The whole concept of global warming is bad science and socialism has never worked anywhere it was tried. The far, far bigger problem is that our country has a foundational problem that is so much more dangerous than polution or political parties. We have lost our ethics, our values, our honesty and our integrity. We have been corrupted like a third world nation. The prosperity of a nation depends on it's ethics or lack thereof. Quit pointing at politicians. They simply are willing to do whatever the masses tell them to do. Look instead at the masses. There's your problem. Fix the masses and you fix the problem. That will take a long time.

The advancement of our society has been based in large measure on progressively less costly means of accomplishing work. In part, this means that cheaper energy drives quality of life, opening doors that would otherwise be closed to common folk. Now, the obamanites and their dupes proclaim the efficacy of very poor science in justifying one of the biggest tax increases in the history of the world. Face it, this is a great bill for the lying liars of the lunatic left, but it will only degrade freedom for most of us. Only the elites (a) to whom middle class wealth is transferred in the bogus, earth-worshipping name of environmental "necessity" and (b) reelected on the basis of donations from the disreputably, centralized economy-selected "businesses" will come out ahead. The rest of us will see an additional $3,000 or so per household wasted by the socialists of the obamanation.

Another thig this Tax bill will do - You know those houses that ACORN is giving away - Well this winter they are going to need heat and guess who is going to pay for it?

“Electricity rates would likely skyrocket,” Pres. Obama said. “Whatever the industry was, they would have to retrofit their operations. That would cost money; they would pass that money on to consumers.”

I love it when they call it the "clean energy" bill or the "climate" bill. It is nothing more than a tax. Didn't Obama say something about not raising taxes to 95% of Americans? Well guess what this raises taxes for 100% of Americans. So, am I the only one who remembers these contradictions or are we simply choosing to see the "good" in all of this. "clean" energy, rather ironic I would say, given that the energy growth will be in the nuclear arena and not much anywhere else. keep talking about solar and wind, thats nothing more than a hot fart coming out of your mouth. Is someone else here tired of the lies and the medias ignorance of this?

It's questionable whether any proponents of the Waxman-Markey bill really understand that it is no more than an effort to suppress property rights and freedom under the cover of utilizing bad science to enable a totalitarian agenda. The same proponents of this bill are the ones who stood shoulder to shoulder to stop our development of nuclear energy going back at least 35 years that I can remember. Remember this -- The New Green is just the Old Red.
Mature
Young Man. At some point you will mature and realize that neither the democrat nor the republican politicians care in any way about you the "little man". Once this eureka moment occurs, you will either (1) realize that life is not fair and you must get over it or (2) find a way to profit from it. While it is fun swinging at the windmills, it actually changes nothing; this spoken by someone that has been there. The driver in this country is money – if you don’t have it or cannot generate it – your opinion does not matter. Even your “noble” environmental stewards are mostly driven by donations and financial survival of “their mission” and the most important part is the continuation of the process rather than a happy outcome. Welcome to adulthood.

Why does no one want to include natural gas in any of this. Nat. gas is up to 50% cleaner than so called clean coal, cheaper than wind, solar, or ethanol. It is abundent we do not have to import it and if we use it we will create thousands of good paying jobs now. Think about it, if wind and solar power are so profitable why do we have to put so much tax money invsestment in. If it were really effecient and profitable then T-Boone and all the others would be using their own money or they would have investers lined up. We have to realize that if there is no profit no one will invest therefore the only ones that are profiting from this so called energy bill is the governmental idiots that are in office.

I was going to write something insightful, but then I read Murt's post and his constant referal to "the journalist Mr. Williard" and how this blog represents all of Fox news' coverage of the Climate Change Bill, and it just totally creeped me out. Cody, I wonder if you had referenced Michael Jackson in your blog if that would have totally set him off. And if he had starting screaming at his computer I wonder if the EPA would have showed up due to the emission of more than Murt's allotted C02 emissions.

Two things are wrong with this bill: 1. The effect of adding additional CO2 into the atmosphere (or removing it for that matter) is insignificant on temperature. 80% of CO2's heating is done in the first 20 parts per million (ppm), after which the effect drops like a stone. By 380 ppm (where we are today), you could double the CO2 content to 760 ppm or cut it in half to 190 ppm and the difference in temperature would be minimal. So, essentially, the laws of physics could give a damn about this bill; it is irrelevant to them. 2. The bill is merely a tax grab, and such luminaries as Al Gore and Kofi Annan (oil for guns with Saddam Hussein) are all for it, so that should tell you that something stinks.

Last Friday on a narrow vote, the US House of Representatives passed legislation to curb greenhouse-gas emissions. The bill, based on the cap-and-trade model, now goes to the Senate. The bill is designed to reduce global warming; instead, it will likely increase your taxes: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123655590609066021.html The idea is that the government would create a new commodity that is scarce: the right to emit carbon. Then, government would mandate that businesses buy this right. Businesses that need to emit carbon, like those in the energy sector, would likely purchase these permits…and then pass it off to you the customer in the form of higher energy bills. As the Wall Street Journal article notes: “The Congressional Budget Office…estimates that the price hikes from a 15% cut in emissions would cost the average household in the bottom-income quintile about 3.3% of its after-tax income every year. That’s about $680, not including the costs of reduced employment and output. The three middle quintiles would see their paychecks cut between $880 and $1,500, or 2.9% to 2.7% of income. The rich would pay 1.7%. Cap and trade is the ideal policy for every Beltway analyst who thinks the tax code is too progressive (all five of them). Translation: your electricity bill is about to go up. And there will also be an impact on renewable energy, too. Currently, electricity that is produced from wind and solar is sold and purchased on the wholesale market along with other electricity produced from fossil fuels like crude, coal, natural gas, hydro and nuclear. Today all of these sources are priced competitively and renewables cost the same as coal. Renewable energy companies must charge the same rate as fossil fuel producers or today the customer will buy whatever is the lowest cost. Once the cap-and-trade starts renewables will be a very special and nitch market that will be in high demand from big power users. Now energy producers will be able to charge a high premium for their kwh production from renewable sources. That will likely enable the other energy companies to increase their market prices too, which will in turn hammer the small businesses and consumers. Let me say again that I agree with the President that we need to reduce our oil consumption. But this is not the way to do it. Instead of penalizing all of us with higher energy bills, why not do more to encourage alternative energy, like biomass, solar and wind?
Gretchen
I received an email from Sen. Nelson (Florida, D)saying he is voting for the cap and trade energy bill. He stated that Florida's fragile ecosystem is in danger. Actually, what endangered Florida's ecosystem started with over building not global warming. He also stated Florida's tourism industry would suffer finanacially. Sure it will suffer because no one will be able to afford the gas prices to drive or fly to Florida. He intends to vote on a bill that he has not read and then uses this diatribe to convince Floridians he's right.

Well, those coal plants must be unionized! I'm sure an appropriate gesture of their appreciation was also required to certain representative's re-election funds. It's another candy coated crap bomb from our democratically elected representatives, because they care!
Jerry
This Bill will punish the consumer by increasing the cost of all forms of energy, electricity, natural gas, petroleum, and coal products. The increased costs will cause manufacturing to be moved to other countries, which do not have such laws. This bill will have no effect on "global warming." That is just a ruse. It will suck the money out of the pockets of the people, making others very wealthy.

Why does Mr. Obama think he can imitate the European model of socialism with cap/trade, and produce anything other than the economic failure that has had Europe in a stupor for so long?? The previous comments on our basic need for CO2 to maintain life on this planet are both true and very basic; where has our collective common sense gone to? Why are a majority of our elected officials acting as if they are in a trance when it comes to dealing body blows to our teetering economy in the name of junk science? A sidebar to your column; it was reported a couple of months ago that George Soros purchased a coal company. At the time I thought it a strange thing to do given his liberal politics, however your article does explain his actions-- he knew this was coming and he knew where the money would be. Lucky guess?

The Senate will kill it. No way this radical piece of crap legislation becomes law. Technology incentives and tax breaks (like the ones recently made to Tesla motors) will accomplish the desired effect. Remember when they offered up a huge cash reward to build a new space ship and all of a sudden we now have a bunch of them (Branson, Paul Allen, Jeff Besos)? No mention of nuclear energy either. Alternative energy won't fly until it can be scaled up and produce over 50% of demand. Right now,it is less than 1%. We need to do like Honduras and have the military drop off our crazy "leaders" in Costa Rica. Seems like all those for this (Gore, Pickens, GE) all have large financial stakes in the outcome. T. Boone Pickens is "green"--he follows the green of money and is gettin' on the gravy train. How about a $1 billion reward for the first to be able to power a city of 100,000 with green technology at a cost LOWER than current? With this cap and trade stuff, expect to see another Enron "screwing over the Grammas" with their energy trade schemes.

While Mr. Willard questions whether any congressional member has read proposed legislation, perhaps the journalist would benefit from not only reading but comprehending the bill. Either the journalist has limited understanding of the issue, or, he has employeed the typical Fox News tactic of deliberate distortion to misreprent the issue. The proposed legislative intent is NOT to "punish" as Mr. Willard implies, rather, the legislation is intended to minimize the economic distruption during a transition period where the energy sector retools to reduce CO2 byproduct. Whether one agrees or not with legislative intent, it does represent one of the most significant bills to pass the House to decades. If passed, it will have enormous consequences to the economy, environment, and demonstrate private/public ability to resolve significant issues. Amazingly, Fox "News" would rather focus on celebrity deaths and other tabloid issues. When one does see mention of this issue, it has chosen to provide an ill conceived, abbreviated, and distorted article - as always - unfair and unbalanced.

This comment isn't about the energy bill but instead it's about Gov. Sanford and whether he should resign or not. Have we forgotten about JFK and Monroe; or Barney Frank and his homosexual ring being run out of his DC apt; or the b---jobs that Clinton got from Monica? Were any of them run out of office? Of course not but let's now pick on Gov. Sanford.

Has it ocurred to anyone else that the energy bill is simply a laundering scheme whereby Obama gets all your money and passes it back to his friends (see GE windmiller CEO sitting on his right hand) and others who manage to manipulate the politics? He'll leave you enough for bus fare but otherwise wants you to wait by the mail box for your food rations...
