Cody has chosen Mos Def for Today’s Jams. Here’s his take:

Before he became a mainstream Hollywood actor (pretty good one at that, IMHO, though I never made it the whole way through 16 blocks with Bruce Willis-felt more like 160 Blocks, no?), Mos Def was an influential music phenom. I’ve written in years past about how he’s one of my favorite “newer” artists. “Newer”, which, given that I’ve hardly listened to much post-1982 music in the last few years, doesn’t exactly mean “undiscovered“.

Anyway, today’s songs all come from his Black on Both Sides album.

1.  Hip Hop

2.  Love

3.  Ms. Fat Booty

4.  Speed Law

5.  Umi Says

6.  Rock n Roll

Rebecca is feeling better and she’s back for tonight’s show. Tomorrow the Happy Hour crew is taking their show on the road. They will be doing a pre-Super Bowl show from Phoenix. Plenty of great guests so make sure you tune in at 5:00 and 11:00pm on channel 43.

Today’s Jams 1.29.08

by Cody Willard

Cody’s pick for Today’s Jams is Brian Eno. Here’s what he has to say:

Brian Eno’s first pop-esque album after his Roxy Music days, Here Come the Warm Jets, was recorded right after he left Roxy Music. For some reason iTunes gives Artist credits on every song of the album to Brian Eno and David Byrne. No other website I just checked out, from Amazon to Wikipedia’s pages about this album even mention Byrne. Strange.

I don’t know anything about Roxy Music, by the way…which I find strange, really, given how much I think I know about rock from that era. Gonna have to go on a Roxy Music blitz for a while, aren’t I? Today’s songs all come from Here Come the Warm Jets:

1. Needles in the Camel’s Eye (my favorite song on the album and a popular tune in my iTunes)

2. The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch (that’s David Byrne singing in there some, right?)

3. Baby’s On Fire

4. Cindy Tells Me

5. Blank Frank

6. Here Come the Warm Jets

PS. Viewer/reader Ethan won the contest yesterday, asking for what rap song samples the beginning of The Chambers Brother’s Funky. The answer is Tribe Called Quest’s “I Left My Wallet in El Segundo. He’ll be getting an Owl Bar & Grill T Shirt if he sends us his address…whattup with that, Ethan?

PPS. You can see me wearing one of my many Owl Bar shirts in this Refreshion video btw.

PPPS. I’ll start doing these contests at least once a week, so stay tuned.

For Today’s Jams Cody has chosen The Chambers Brothers. Here’s his take:

I about fell off my couch the first time I heard The Chambers Brothers gospel-esque harmonies over the cowbell thump and 60s rock guitar riffing of Time Has Come Today. The 11 minute version of course (the shorter single version feels like vanilla ice cream after a banana split, if you know what I mean).

1. I Can’t Stand It (one of the top 5 most played songs on my iTunes)

2. All Strung Out Over You

3. Time Has Come Today

4. New Generation

5. Are You Ready?

6. Funky (Play the opening of this one, a famous rap song demo’d it…the rap song’s about losing something in Mexico…first one to email me with the right answer AFTER I ask this on air during the show tonight gets a free T shirt from the greatest burger joint in the world, The Owl Bar & Grill in San Antonio, NM.)

(PS. A bonus Ruidoso Warrior baseball cap for the first person to email me what multi-billion dollar empire was originally founded in San Antonio, NM, where there are still fewer than 100 residents and a cow-per-square-mile ratio blows away the person-per-square-mile ratio.)

PPS. Their manager sent me a Chambers Brothers T shirt that I proudly wear often even at Fox HQ after I wrote about these guys here:

and here:

Well, coming off of last week’s crazy market ride, this week should be pretty interesting…Tune into to Happy Hour at 5:00 and 11:00pm on channel 43 to get yourself up to speed with the business events of the day.
